MLB

Yesterday was all about Sunday afternoon comebacks! We had a bunch of late-inning rallies around the league. There were a pair of walk-offs, some big momentum swings, and 7th inning confusion that led to a big win.

As the first weekend of the baseball season comes to a close, four teams remain undefeated. The Pirates and Yankees are 4-0 and the Brewers and Tigers are 3-0. On the disappointing end of those sweeps are the Marlins, Astros, Mets, and White Sox.

Reds Walk It Off

The Reds entered the 9th inning down two runs. With two outs, Jonathan India doubled on the 10th pitch of his at bat. Will Benson crushed a home run to center field, tying the game. Christian Encarnacion-Strand did one better, driving the ball over the left field fence to walk it off for the Reds.

A’s Literally Walk It Off

Next come the Oakland A’s!   They got into the win column via a walk-off walk on Sunday. Abraham Toro worked a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th for the victory. The top of the A’s lineup also had a good day. Esteury Ruiz had two hits, a stolen base, and scored two runs, while JJ Bleday went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Pirates Come Back From a 5-0 Deficit

In search of their first win, the Marlins came out strong in the first inning on Sunday. Jake Burger singled in a run before Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s grand slam gave the Marlins a 5-0 lead. The Pirates immediately tagged Marlins’ lefty Trevor Rogers for three runs in the second inning, but they remained down until late in the game. Rowdy Tellez’s homer game them the lead in the seventh, then Nick Gordon answered back with a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Pirates pushed ahead in the 10th, securing a sweep.

Dodgers Best Cardinals on Sunday Night Baseball

Starting pitchers Gavin Stone and Steven Matz dueled through the early innings of the Sunday night game, but by the eighth inning the Cardinals had a 4-2 lead. That was when the Dodgers showed their depth, however. Teoscar Hernández hit his third homer as a member of the Dodgers and, two batters later, Max Muncy gave Los Angeles the lead. For as much praise the top of the Dodgers’ order gets — rightfully so! — the bottom part of the lineup showed up last night.

Confusion at the Bank

The Braves went into the seventh inning with a 3-2 lead over the Phillies before some confusion sparked Philly and altered the course of the game. Philadelphia challenged an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh and although the call was overturned, Atlanta didn’t seem to get the memo. Having walked off the field and begun to high five each other near the dugout, the Braves had to awkwardly return to their positions. Four straight singles from Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, and J.T. Realmuto led to an additional three runs, giving the Phillies a 5-3 lead and just enough to secure their first win of the season.

Soto’s 3-Hit Day Keeps Yankees Undefeated

Juan Soto continued his torrid start to the 2024 season. He went 3-for-5 with a ninth inning, go-ahead RBI on Sunday. Through the first four games of the season, Soto is 9-for-17 with one home run and 4 RBI.
